A woman carrying a firearm acted in self-defense when she shot a female suspect during an unprovoked attack at an Iowa grocery store over the weekend, according to authorities.

The harrowing incident unfolded at around 10 a.m. on Sunday in the capital city of Des Moines.

Police responded to the scene of a shooting at a Hy-Vee grocery market where two people were reportedly struck by gunfire.

“Police say Kapri Lashawn Francis, 30, of Des Moines, violently assaulted a woman without provocation,” KCCI reports.

“The woman who was assaulted, who lawfully possessed a handgun, fired once in self defense.”

Francis was reportedly struck in the leg.

A male shopper was also hit by the round after it ricocheted.

“This was something spontaneous that unfortunately happened in that grocery store where a lot of people were grocery shopping this morning,” Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek.

Police reportedly interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage before determining the victim likely acted in self-defense during a violent assault.

Francis received medical treatment at a local hospital before being arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury.
