Police are searching for an arson suspect after a ballot drop-off box was set on fire Sunday evening in Los Angeles.

“I noticed the smoke coming out of the ballot box, it was pretty heavy,” one witness described, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Several ballots out of 200 votes inside the box were burned, prompting the Los Angeles County Registrar’s office to contact voters to resubmit their votes.

“It appears someone lit a piece of paper or newspaper on fire, and then tossed in the other side of this ballot box,” reported KCAL.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by dropping a hose inside the box, “then cut open the box and removed dozens of damaged ballots, which appeared to be charred or soaked,” reports The New York Times.

The registrar’s office says as a result they’ll be increasing ballot pickup frequency, as the last pickup time was Saturday around 10AM.

“This attack on a county ballot drop box was reprehensible,” lamented Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn. “Burning ballots is not just vandalism, it is an attack on our democracy and on our residents’ right to vote. Whoever did this must be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

In addition to local arson investigators, the county registrar has also notified the FBI and the California attorney general to obtain footage which can help identify the individual responsible.

“Additionally, the damaged drop box location has been closed, officials said,” reports Fox Los Angeles.
