The number of migrants and asylum seekers attempting to enter the United States is increasing rapidly as foreign nationals anticipate the possibility of Joe Biden administration.
Apprehensions, deportations, and drug seizures at the southern border are on the rise, due in part to “perceived and or anticipated shifts in policies,” according to acting Customs and Border Protection chief Mark Morgan.
Biden has vowed to immediately begin rolling back a wide swathe of the Trump administration’s immigration agenda should he assume office in January.
“Make no mistake, that is going to sound the alarm that our borders are open,” Morgan told the Washington Times.
“You will see a crisis that makes last year’s crisis look like child’s play. And you can take that to the bank.”
Border agents encountered over 69,000 illegal migrants in the month of October, up from roughly 57,600 in September.
Most of those migrants were swiftly deported.
“Cocaine seizures in October were up 57% compared to September, and up 63% compared to October 2019,” the Times reports. “Heroine was up 132% and 181% respectively, and fentanyl soared 58% compared to a month ago, and about 300% compared to October 2019.”
The Federation for American Immigration Reform has analyzed the spike in migrant traffic at the border and cites a potential Biden administration as a top factor.
“With Joe Biden defeating Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, immigration policy is expected to change dramatically,” writes Matthew Tragesser. “President-elect Joe Biden has made clear that his administration will prioritize and protect illegal aliens by offering them a pathway to citizenship, halting deportations for at least 100 days, and stopping construction of the southern border wall.”
The Trump administration recently completed 400 miles of new border wall system and projects to complete 450 miles before year’s end.
