A U.S. Border Patrol agent has been indicted by a grand jury for his alleged role in trafficking illegal aliens, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The agency released a statement on Tuesday notifying the public that a long-time member of Border Patrol serving in Laredo Sector was arrested and charged on May 21.

“He has been charged with felony offenses related to transporting undocumented individuals for private gain. The agent who was arrested entered on duty in 2008 and is currently on indefinite suspension,” CBP explained.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted by both the DHS Office of Inspector General and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stresses honor and integrity in every aspect of our mission and expects officers and agents to adhere to the oath they take to uphold and enforce the laws of this country. CBP will continue to support the criminal or administrative investigation of alleged misconduct by any of our personnel, on or off duty,” CBP asserted in the press release.

The news comes amid an explosive migrant crisis unfolding under the Biden administration, as over 178,000 illegal aliens were captured at the southern border by U.S. authorities last month and another 30,000 or more slipped across unchecked.

Laredo Sector has been a hotbed for migrant trafficking, with immigration authorities and local law enforcement busting stash houses on a regular basis.

A stunning seven stash houses were shut down in Laredo during one 24-hour span last month.
