A charter school in California is accused of discriminating against unvaccinated students by reportedly threatening them with expulsion and forcing them to study outdoors.
In a viral TikTok video, a student at New West charter school in Los Angeles films as she and other pupils sit outdoors in a small section of a parking lot near the school cordoned off with caution tape.
“I’m a student at New West Charter School and I’m here with five other girls. Four of them are freshmen, one is a junior and I’m a sophomore,” the student filming says.
“And we are being threatened to be suspended because we don’t have the COVID-19 vaccine.”
The student says she and her peers feel they’re being discriminated against with the unvaxxed segregation policies.
“And we’re being refused of the right to attend school… And we’re being closed off by this caution tape thing. We’re being segregated from the rest of the school.”
Responding to the viral video, New West Charter officials admitted to discriminating against the unvaccinated students, adding that their decision to segregate them following winter break was “board-approved.”
Officials claim, however, they asked the students and their parents to leave campus and that the students allegedly stayed at the school and staged a “sit-in” protest.
“Today, January 18, New West Charter enforced its board-approved vaccination policy as students returned to campus after the school’s winter break (December 20, 2021 – January 17, 2022),” the school wrote on Facebook.
“More than 96% of students are now vaccinated at NWC. However, six students who did not follow the new policy still attempted to participate in classes. Staff asked them and their parents to leave campus, but they refused.”
“The students proceeded to stage a sit-in directly behind designated areas for student PCR screenings on campus. New West Charter school administration notified local authorities who came to campus and helped alleviate the disruption.”
