Plans to implement the first ‘gender-neutral’ school toilets in Queensland, Australia, were blocked by lawmakers after a national backlash, according to reports.

Fortitude Valley State Secondary College, a new ‘vertical’ high school in Brisbane, was set to be the first school in the state to implement bathrooms designed to be used by both boys and girls.

Australia’s Department of Education had previously confirmed the plan, telling the Daily Mail, “the new facilities met contemporary design standards in relation to accessibility, inclusivity, privacy and safety.”

However, outraged parents and citizens across the country forced a change of course.

“We already know some really bad things happen to kids in bathroom areas of schools – bullying, sexting, kids recording on mobiles. These things already go on when they’re just within their own sex, and then you’re adding in an extra element,” one mother and educator told the Daily Mail.

“Being a teenager is a really big time of change, for boys and for girls, and kids have a right to feel safe.”

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk subsequently overturned the decision, saying, “I’ll be making it very clear they need to have toilets that are for boys and for girls.”

Palaszczuk’s top political opponents agree.

“It’s deeply concerning that a 12-year-old girl would be in a bathroom with a 17-year-old,” said legislator Deb Frederickson, Leader of the Queensland Opposition.

Education Minister Grace Grace has confirmed the necessary realignment of bathroom protocols has been made in response to Premier Palaszczuk’s decision, saying, “This includes a change to make separate, gender-specific toilets for boys and girls available. There are also specific toilets for students with a disability.”

Children as young as four will be requested to provide information about their “gender identity and sexual orientation” to school district officials in Ottawa, Canada, according to the CBC.

A new survey “aimed at understanding diversity” will be administered to all students by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) in November.

“Starting Nov. 26, all OCDSB students will be asked for personal information including details related to their race, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity,” the CBC reports. “For the first time, the voluntary surveys will be administered to younger students, too.”

“Data will be gathered from all students attending OCDSB schools, with parents completing surveys for students in junior kindergarten to Grade 6, while students in Grades 7 to 12 will fill out surveys themselves.”

According to the OCDSB website, children who will be 4-years-old by December 31, 2019, were eligible to start junior kindergarten in September.

A group of black parents asked OCDSB to obtain “race-based data after they felt their children faced discrimination within the school system,” according to the CBC.

“If we don’t understand the specific types of support that students need, then we’ll not be able to fully ensure that they leave with a sense of … academic success, as well as a sense of well-being,” Jacqueline Lawrence, OCDSB’s diversity and equity coordinator told CBC Radio.

“What this will allow us to do is to be able to provide unique identifiers so that we can link the student data information to current information that we have around achievements, around suspension.”

The survey data will be made public in 2020, but personal information will reportedly remain confidential.

City councilors in Berkeley, California, have approved changes to the municipal code which will see “gender preferential language,” such as ‘manhole’ and ‘patrolmen,’ replaced with “gender neutral” terms.

City Councilman Rigel Robinson, a 23-year-old who recently graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, co-sponsored the ordinance.

“According to Code Publishing Company, the Berkeley Municipal Code currently contains mostly masculine pronouns,” the proposal explains. “In recent years, broadening societal awareness of transgender and gender nonconforming identities has brought to light the importance of non-binary gender inclusivity.”

In addition to replacing all references to “He, She, Him, Himself, Herself” in the existing code, an expandable list of “Gendered Terms” will be replaced, including: “Bondsman,” “Craftsmen,” “Fraternal,” “Manmade,” “Manhole,” and “Ombudsman.”

“Sorority” and “Fraternity” will be replaced by “Collegiate Greek system residence.”

The entire phrase, “The masculine pronoun includes the feminine,” will be replaced with “Words referring to a specific gender may be extended to any other gender.”

“Tonight, Berkeley City Council adopted first reading of an ordinance responding to my proposal revising the municipal code to include gender neutral pronouns,” Councilman Robinson tweeted after Tuesday’s vote. “There is power in language. This is a small move, but it matters.”

More recently, Councilman Robinson shared a screenshot of his response to an email received from a producer of Tucker Carlson Tonight inviting him to appear on the program.

“Unfortunately I won’t be able to come on the show,” Robinson wrote. “Tucker Carlson is a dangerous, xenophobic, racist, white supremacist goblin who I’m not interested in engaging with.”

Robinson also shared an image of himself appearing to be in attendance at a protest against the Trump administration, writing, “MFW there’s a fascist in the White House.”

Two transgender sprinters finished 1st and 2nd place at a recent girls’ high school track championship in Connecticut.

Terry Miller and Andraya Yearwood dominated their female competitors in the 55-meter dash, marking their latest 1-2 finish in a girls’ race, which they accomplished last year, in addition to other top finishes for Miller.

Miller’s time of 6.95 seconds in the 55-meter sprint reportedly set a new state indoor record.

Miller and Yearwood, who attend Bloomfield High School and Cromwell High School respectively, have been at the center of controversy regarding biological males competing in female sports.

Both are reportedly undergoing hormone therapy.

Donald Trump Jr. weighed in on the matter, expressing his commiseration with female athletes who suffered due to the unfair circumstances.

“I feel so sorry for the young ladies who trained their whole lives to be the best in their state and to hopefully attain scholarships etc etc… this is a grave injustice,” Trump tweeted.

One of those young ladies, Selina Soule, would likely have qualified for New England regional events and a chance to showcase her abilities for more colleges had she finished in sixth place – instead of eighth, behind Miller and Yearwood.

“We all know the outcome of the race before it even starts; it’s demoralizing,” she told the Washington Times. “I fully support and am happy for these athletes for being true to themselves. They should have the right to express themselves in school, but athletics have always had extra rules to keep the competition fair.”

Parents unhappy with current policies enabling transgender athletes to compete against females with little restrictions are petitioning for changes that would establish hormone standards or other methods to eliminate unfair advantages.

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova recently came under fire from transgender activists and mainstream media after writing that biological males competing in women’s sports is “insane and it’s cheating.”

Airlines will soon be adding booking options for customers who identify with genders other than male or female, including “unspecified” or “undisclosed.”

Airlines for America (A4A) shared the details of a new international standard for ‘non-binary’ passengers with CNN Travel.

“U.S. airlines value a culture of diversity and inclusion, both in the workplace and for our passengers, and we work hard each day to accommodate the needs of all travelers, while delivering a safe, secure and enjoyable flight experience,” A4A said in a statement.

The policy has reportedly been agreed upon by A4A and the International Air Transport Association, whose members include most major U.S. airlines, and is slated to go into effect on June 1, 2019.

Member airlines will handle implementation of the changes.

United Airlines recently announced their own rollout, tweeting, “In the coming weeks, customers will be able to select the gender with which they most closely identify during the booking process.”

Delta Airlines and America Airlines both told CNN they are working to enact the new policies, as well.

“As part of Delta’s ongoing efforts to accommodate the needs of diverse customers throughout our business, we are planning to offer a non-binary gender option during the booking process,” Delta said in a statement.

An Australian university has unveiled ‘all gender’ bathrooms to the replace less inclusive ‘unisex’ restrooms.

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) changed the designation of some unisex bathrooms in a move to “recognize gender diversity” and make “all individuals feel welcome and safe” on campus.

“Some people within our community don’t identify with traditional binary genders (male and female),” UTS said in a statement. “Others don’t feel comfortable using a bathroom designated by gender, sometimes because they’ve had a negative experience using a single-gender bathroom due to their appearance or gender identity. All gender bathrooms provide a space that can be used comfortably by everyone.”

‘All gender’ lavatories can be found in 10 different buildings across campus.

“We have taken a step to improve the on-campus experience for people who prefer not to use single-gender bathrooms, with the establishment of all gender bathrooms in 10 of our buildings,” the school explains.

The UTS Queer Collective praised the decision on social media, writing, “It’s official: gender-neutral bathrooms have landed at UTS! This wouldn’t have been possible without the effort of Queer Collective members, the UTS Students’ Association, and of course, everyone who signed our petition!”

“We still have a long way to go, but this is an important step for trans and gender diverse individuals to feel safe and validated on campus. Big win!”

A UK supermarket has altered logos on parking spaces for mothers with small children to meet ‘gender neutrality’ criteria, British media reports.

Aldi grocery store in Dunstable, England, has removed the dress from ‘mother-child’ parking space emblems, in order to promote inclusivity for parents of all ‘sexual orientations.’

A Facebook post and accompanying photo shared by mother-of-three, Ema Taylor, quickly went viral and was magnified by UK press.

“The world has literally gone MAD!!” Taylor wrote. “So went to the shop today to be told I couldn’t park in the parent space as they were painting it… painting the dress off the stick person because they need to be ‘gender neutral’ as the dress is offending dads with children and people who do not identify as male or female?!”

“If you are a dad and you don’t park in the parent parking because they have a dress on unfriend me please! It’s a joke! Second to that if you look at the new and ‘improved’ sign you will see that it now looks like a stick man with a cape on so if you don’t identify as Superman you can’t park there.”

Taylor says she asked a maintenance crew for more information about the alterations being performed, according to the Sun.

“There were two guys standing in front of bays they had just painted,” Taylor said. “I asked if they were taking the spaces away and when he told me why they were doing it I thought he was joking at first.”

“He said they needed to be gender neutral as the dress is offending dads with children and people who don’t identify as male or female.”

The Telegraph sought comment from an Aldi spokesperson, who said, “All parent and child car parking spaces at Aldi stores are gender-neutral. This sign was painted incorrectly and will be changed.”

Interestingly, Aldi, a German brand found in 1946, opened its first store in Great Britain in 1990, but is just now addressing concerns that fathers may feel alienated by parking lot signage aimed at mothers.
