A teenage illegal alien from Mexico faces up to 10 years in prison for smuggling fellow illegals in the United States, authorities say.
Christopher Rodriguez-Martinez, 18, pleaded guilty to transporting illegal aliens, U.S. Attorney Jennifer B. Lowery announced last week.
The charges stemmed from an incident that unfolded on December 7, 2021, in Brownsville, Texas.
Officers say they observed “Rodriguez-Martinez and Guillermo Villasenor-Sanchez in a silver vehicle near the Los Fresnos canal. Soon after, they saw six individuals run from the canal and get into the vehicle,” according to a Department of Justice press release.
“Rodriguez-Martinez was the driver and fled the area at a high rate of speed. As law enforcement approached the vehicle, Rodriguez-Martinez lost control and made impact with the Border Patrol (BP) unit.”
The driver and passengers attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, approximately $30,000 in cash was discovered inside.
Rodriguez-Martinez, who was found to be residing illegally in Brownsville, is scheduled be sentenced on May 25 and faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
