The mayor of a Texas border city plunged into chaos by historic winter weather has issued a desperate plea to the federal government, asking that no more illegal aliens be released into his jurisdiction.
Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano says his constituents have been battling through power outages, food and water shortages, and other crises brought on by severe weather conditions that have crippled infrastructure across the state.
The latest woes are compounded by the ongoing ‘COVID crisis’ and Del Rio has no capacity to harbor illegal migrants, Lozano asserts.
“I am pleading and requesting to you to please put a halt to any measures regarding the release of immigrants awaiting court dates into the city of Del Rio and surrounding areas,” Lozano said in an address directed at President Joe Biden. “We do not have the resources available to house and accommodate these migrants within our community.”
“I will have no choice but to use the extreme measures under the emergency declaration, as mayor of Del Rio, Texas, to refuse the entry of migrants awaiting court dates into the city of Del Rio.”
Lozano warns if migrants are released into the city, they will not be offered assistance due to the current “dire circumstances” facing taxpaying residents.
“I am asking to please stop. Please make another plan for this federal issue,” Lozano appealed.
Lozano says he is in communication with other border mayors who have also voiced serious concerns about the migrant population in the region – many of whom are being freed into the U.S. without COVID screenings of any kind.
“I am asking you to ensure the health and safety of all of our taxpaying citizens along the border are treated with the same urgent consideration,” Lozano said. “Releasing the migrant population without any COVID-19 protection protocols is undermining your commitment to the stance against COVID-19.”
