Police in Illinois were investigating an attempted carjacking when they fell victim to the suspects they were trying to locate, according to reports.

The wild incident unfolded at around 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning in Calumet City, which lies just outside of Chicago in Cook County.

Multiple officers responded to reports of an attempted carjacking at gas station in the city, authorities say.

“When they arrived, four armed suspects ran off in different directions,” the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

While cops were scouring the surrounding area, one of the suspects returned to the scene and hopped into one of the Calumet City police SUVs.

The suspect attempted to escape in the SUV but was thwarted by an officer approaching the vehicle.

With the patrol car still rolling backwards, the suspect jumped out and tried unsuccessfully to force entry into a passenger car parked nearby.

Incredibly, the suspect then ran to another police SUV, climbed into the driver’s seat, and sped off just as more officers arrived.

“The suspect got onto the Bishop Ford Freeway and exited near 99th and Green Streets, where he dumped the SUV and ran off,” the Sun-Times reports. “Officers used the vehicle’s GPS tracker to recover the SUV, which was not damaged.”

Authorities had not made any arrests at the time of this writing, according to the most recent available updates.
